Village school comes tops in primary schools league table

Christmas on a high for top school in Wigginton

Pupils and teachers at St Bartholomews School went off for their Christmas break at the end of a cracker of a term after being ranked top in the primary school leagues tables.

The news of the point score of 34.1, which gave it joint first place with a north London school, in the primary schools’ league tables race just a few weeks after it achieved an outstanding Ofsted report.

Headteacher Julie Kemp said: “We are absolutely delighted, especially with our Ofsted saying all our teachers were outstanding and this is the reason why we have come top, because the teaching is so good.”

Primary schools in the country were ranked on there Key Stage Two SATS results.

At St Barts the youngsters excelled in both English and maths with all of them achieving a level four or above. The government requires that at least 60 per cent of pupils in schools achieve this.

The youngsters surpassed national expectations with 42 per cent of them gaining a level 6 in maths and 33 per cent got a level six in English.

It is not the first time the school has been in the top echelons of the league tables. In 2008 it was number two and it has been in the top 100 for at least the past five years.

Mrs Kemp said: “It does mean we are constantly over subscribed but for us our school is about much more than that.

“It’s about children’s wellbeing and achieving in other areas of the curriculum. We excel in music and sport as well. The whole child is important.”

Another chart topping school in the league tables was Little Gaddesden, which totted up an average point score of 33 and came second in the county.
