A video that dates back to 1969 shows how Hemel Hempstead’s historic High Street was previously revamped to compete with the new town.
The video put online by British Pathe shows how the Old Town’s history was combined with the new.
Today the area is undergoing another transformation as workers create a one-way system for motorists with pedestrianised areas to help entice shoppers to visit.
It’s not the first time that the area has struggled to compete with town centre shopping. The narrator on the film reveals: “Once the commercial centre of town, the High Street, suffered a severe set back when the bustling new shopping centre was built.”
