Tring trio’s cycle trek

THREE former schoolmates cycled the length of the UK to raise £20,000 for charity.

Ex-Tring School pupils Will Green and Rory Merchant, both 25, and David Manning, 27, who lives in Watford, rode from Lands End to John O’Groats in eight days.

The gang beat their target by three days and raised more than £20,000 for the Motor Neurone Disease Association.

Will, who lives with Rory in Henry Street, Tring, said: “We did not think we would get anywhere near £20,000. We were expecting £3,000, but it just snowballed.”

The trio decided on the task on a whim while at a pub, and bought second-hand bikes on Ebay the next day. They wanted to help Rory’s uncle, who has motor neurone disease.

After eight months of training, they began the task on Saturday, September 3.

The hardest part of their journey was mountainous Scotland, where they caught the tail end of Hurricane Irene.

Will, who lost his appetite during the cycle and suffered a repetitive strain injury, said: “It was really challenging and tough, but we really enjoyed it.”
