Tring pub having a £30,000 makeover after second management change in two months

A Tring pub is in the middle of a £30,000 makeover after being taken over by a new landlord.

Clive Coules now has a five-year lease on The Black Horse, which will reopen on Friday after the work is finished.

He said: “I came to this pub 12 months ago when I happened to be in Tring. I live in Banbury and I thought: ‘This is a nice pub with really friendly people.’

“When the lease came up, I thought: ‘I recognise that place – that’s where I want to be.’

“It is a lovely town with good, friendly people and it is a community-based pub, which I wanted – rather than one in a busy city centre.”

The Black Horse was only last month taken over by couple Dawn Coleman and Mal Crowle.

But Clive said they were only there to look after the pub until a more long-term landlord could be found.

The dad-of-three has managed three pubs in Banbury – including a free house that was derelict when he bought it for £150,000. He later sold it for just under £500,000.
