Young members of Tring Air Training Corps came up trumps when they joined almost 400 colleagues from Herts and Bucks to take part in the prestigious annual Wing Exercise.

End scores were close but the team fought through to come out on top of the 30 teams competing for the honours.

Held over three days at the start of May, the exercise sees cadet teams pit themselves against physically and mentally demanding challenges including target shooting, practical leadership, problem solving, first aid and physical fitness.

Ten cadets and two staff from the Tring group took part in the exercise at a defence training base in Swynnerton, Staffordshire.

They also had the opportunity to meet the Commandant of the Air Cadet Organisation, Air Commodore Dawn McAfferty.

Commanding officer of Tring Squadron, Flight Lieutenant Andy Bryant, said: “It was particularly gratifying to hear the commandant say that many other teams thought Tring were the ones to beat.”

Team leader Cadet Flight Sergeant Stewart Waring said: “We did not know if we had the lead until the presentations at the end and we lifted the trophy.

“It was nail biting. The team is on such a high.”

Events such as this are just one aspect of challenges the Tring Air Training Corps has to offer young people. Membership is open to those aged 13 to 17 and the Tring group meets at its New Road, New Mill headquarters every Monday and Thursday at 7.15pm.
