ROADS chiefs cannot figure out why a hole appeared in a town high street - forcing them to close it for almost a week.
The sinkhole appeared in the Berkhamsted road near St Peter’s Church at 7.30pm on Saturday, May 28. The road did not reopen until after midday on Friday.
Herts Highways spokesman Jo Brown said: “One possibility is that the dry weather might have caused the ground under the road to shrink, which can occasionally result in a hole appearing.
“The hole has now been filled in and we will continue to monitor the road.”
