A FORMER mayor who was Berkhamsted’s only freeman has died.

John Cook, 83, was mayor from 1993 to 1995, and also worked as a warden at St Peter’s Church in the town’s High Street.

Vicar Rev Michael Bowie said: “He was a huge amount of fun and always wanted the best for people.”

John also wrote Berkhamsted’s Story: A Book for the Millennium.

His funeral will be at St Peter’s at noon on Saturday.
