A new memorial to fallen heroes has been unveiled.

The poppy, which takes pride of place next to Hemel Hempstead’s Rainbow sculpture in Marlowes, was created by Potten End mum Maura Gillespie with help from her two children Zak and Zara.

The new war memorial was chosen through a competition created by Hemel Hempstead MP Mike Penning and promoted in our sister paper the Gazette. It was blessed by Rev James Reveley, the vicar at St John’s Church in Boxmoor, on Saturday ahead of Remembrance Sunday.

“I’m thrilled,” said Mr Penning.
