Regulars at The Boat pub in Berkhamsted are the driving force behind the adoption of a canal lock.

A Berkhamsted pub has followed its neighbour’s example by adopting a lock of the Grand Union Canal.

The Boat pub near Lock 54 was inspired by fellow tavern The Rising Sun, just 100 metres away, whose landlords agreed to look after the general maintenance of Lock 55.

The Boat regular and new canal volunteer Roger Alsop said: “I’m passionate about the canal and think that local communities can really help add the extra special touches that could make the waterway even better.

“It’s great that two pubs have decided to adopt here, hopefully it will encourage others to do the same.”
