Sweet peas and roses catch the eye as Chipperfield growers defy the weather

Have your say

Despite the dreadful weather this year Chipperfield Horticultural Society’s summer show was a great success.

John North and Roger Pigg are well known as sweet pea growers and they exhibited some wonderful blooms, which filled the hall with an intoxicating scent.

The roses, though less numerous, were also beautiful as were the other flowers exhibited in different classes.

The handicraft, photography and domestic exhibits were very much admired and the Chipperfield Brownies and pupils from St. Paul’s School created wonderful posters of endangered animals.

Eileen Foulgham secured the Baldwin Cup for floral art and the T.J. Trophy for the best specimen rose while Ann Soanes was winner of the Cottagers Challenge Cup for the most points in the show and the A.T. Hutchinson Cup for most points in section for roses.

The society’s final show of this year takes place on Saturday, September 21.
