Every single police officer now working for Herts Constabulary has been recruited into the force by one woman.

Jean Starkey – who in March this year reached 40 years of service with the constabulary – has been involved in the recruiting process of 1,941 serving officers and many more that have since retired or moved on.

The 59-year-old has also taken on nearly all of the current 412 special constables and the majority of the existing 254 police community support officers.

She said: “I have loved seeing officers progress in their careers and I also can’t believe I’ve reached 40 years of service.”

Jean, a business support assistant, first began working for the police in 1972 at 19 years old. She started working with sickness records and personnel files before moving into traffic management and then, in 1977 joined the HR recruitment team.
