Sportspace car park signs not clear enough, says disabled driver who fell foul of regime

A disabled motorist fined £75 while waiting to collect his daughter after her gym class has criticised signs at the Sportspace car park.

Blue Badge holder John Barrett waited in a disabled bay at the Hemel Hempstead leisure centre for 36 minutes and did not spot notices telling drivers to register at reception.

“In reception there are signs that hit you in the face,” said John. “The signs outside are 10 foot up. You have to physically look up to actually see them and then it’s in small writing.”

Sportspace has brought in a parking company to stop commuters and shoppers from using its car park. The new regime gives motorists a 20 minute pick-up period but those staying longer register their car number at reception.

John, who suffers from neuropathy, said: “I think it is disgraceful. For half an hour it has cost me £2.50 a minute.”

Civil Enforcement Ltd has refused John’s appeal.
