THE lucky winners of a sports cash competition to celebrate a summer of sporting fun have been announced.
Members of Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club, Hemel Martial Arts, Hemel Hempstead Town Cricket Club, Dacorum Majorettes and High Herts Riding School have been busy voting for their clubs since May.
But there could only be two winners - who each get a slice of £1,000 - and they are Hemel Martial Arts and Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club.
The swimming club will be using its cash injection to set up a swimming academy that will provide a link from learning to swim to competitive swimming, while the martial arts group will pay for new equipment and expanding its gym space.
People were invited to back their favourite clubs by voting for groups at participating stores in Riverside Shopping Centre.
Just under 7,500 votes were cast - the swimming club bagged 2,480 votes, while the martial arts winners got 1,650.
Both groups will be presented with their £1,000 prizes on Saturday, July 7, during the shopping centre’s Olympic Big Weekend.
Centre manager David Robinson said: “We ran the Community Sports Awards as a way of showing our support to local clubs in this very exciting sporting year. All of the entries we received were fantastic and it was clearly evident that the five finalists that were selected have a huge following in the local area as everyone did really well in the votes. Congratulations to Hemel Hempstead Swimming Club and Hemel Martial Arts on their win, I hope the money will bring them one step closer to achieving their goals to help the local community.”
