Slideshow: Hemel Hempstead scouts paddle off for a weekend kayak challenge

A weekend on the water was on the cards for a group of Hemel Hempstead scouts who accepted a kayak challenge through the Lee Valley.

Setting off on Saturday in Stanstead Abbotts, a team of 22 young people and adults headed south along the River Lee, negotiating several locks, where the kayaks had to be lifted out and carried around the locks before being dropped back in.

After a picnic lunch, they continued paddling until they reached The Hertfordshire Young Mariners’ Base at Cheshunt Lake, completing the first six mile leg of their adventure.

Here they were welcomed with hot drinks before the team set up their camp for the night.

On Sunday morning, after an early start and a hearty breakfast, the group continued their journey through four more locks and five more miles, until they reached their final destination, Ponders End Lock in Enfield.
