Scouting for our new leader in West Herts – can you help?

Explorer Scouts from the West Herts District met for a rounders and barbecue event at the Braidwood Campsite.

Around 70 Explorer scouts and leaders gathered to celebrate the end of term with an inter-unit rounders match and barbecue.

The 14 to 18-year-old Explorers, drawn from all four Berkhamsted and Tring units which make up the West Herts District, enjoyed the fun but competitive game, won by joint teams from Icknield and The Crong.

Oddy unit leader Diane Roberts said: “The evening ended a busy year for all four units who have among other things, competed in competitions, camped out in various locations, walked on the hills around the country, run active weekly programmes both indoors and out, organised teams to take part successfully in all three levels of the Duke of Edinburgh award, and raised money for local charities and special needs explorer scouts.”

The event also saw three new Explorers join the Akeman unit, and a further three members moving into the West Herts Network unit, for those aged 18 to 25 who choose to carry on scouting.

Over the summer weeks, the scouts will be going on expedition to West Yorkshire, as well as travelling to Gibraltar and Morocco and setting out on their gold, silver and bronze Duke of Edinburgh expeditions.

The West Herts District is also appealing for a new network leader. District commissioner Ian Cutler said: “We are looking for an enthusiastic young adult, ideally under 30, to become the leader of the West Herts Network.

“We can offer an exciting programme and many interesting challenges as well as a sense of personal satisfaction.”
