Scouse about that for an amateur production?

TRING School for the Performing Arts will stage the first amateur production of hugely popular, feel-good musical Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi at the school’s Markova Theatre at the end of the month.

Written by multi-award winning playwright, director and journalist Phil Willmott with additional music by Elliot Davies, the show is a simple yet tragic love story.

Set initially in the present day, when a hotel worker happens upon a mysterious stranger she is soon transported back to the former glory days of the Adelphi Hotel in Liverpool.

It’s the 1930s and in Liverpool the glitz and glamour of Hollywood are pouring off the luxury liners for their first taste of England – a night at the city’s most fashionable hotel.

Amidst all the decadence, no-nonsense Alice from reception has fallen for the dashing Thompson from accounts – but fate, Hollywood, two wars and a dizzying array of staff and guests intervene in an epic love story spanning 60 years.

Originally commissioned by the Liverpool Playhouse as a centrepiece to the city’s year as European Capital of Culture, its sell-out extended run at the Liverpool Playhouse won a Theatrical Management Association award for the UK’s best musical and a whatsonstage nomination for the best regional production.

Tring Park principal Stefan Anderson said: “We are immensely proud we’ve been given permission to perform the first amateur production of Once Upon A Time At The Adelphi. We know we have some of the best new talent here at Tring Park and this hugely popular musical gives us another chance to build on the school’s nationwide reputation.”

Weston Turville-based Jake Small, who is 17 and who joined Tring Park in 2007, takes on a lead role alongside 16-year-old Megan Bancroft who joined the school last year from the Sylvia Young Stage School.

The musical will take place at the school’s Markova Theatre on Sunday, January 29 at 4pm and from Tuesday, January 31 to Thursday, February 2 at 7.30pm. Call the Markova Theatre on 01442 821516 for tickets or go online at www.tringpark.com.
