Scorcher of summer proves fruitful for village autumn show

This summer’s warm weather proved perfect for vegetable and fruit growers alike who showed off their produce at the Bovingdon Autumn Show.

With nearly 250 entries from 37 competitors, the Bovingdon Horticultural Society’s autumn event was another colourful affair.

Mike Leon retained the Ernest Wright Cup while Doug Leslie won the Victory Hall Cup for his superb leeks, as well as the Chrysanthemum Cup.

Julie Parker won the Dahlia Cup and the Outspan Cup for her magnificent gladioli.

Bovingdon’s own Bake Off was won by Vivien Gabriel who beat off stiff competition for the best Plum Cake, thus winning the Horwood Bakery cup.

Mavis Lawrence not only won the Floral Art Bowl but also the Copse Hill Cup for preserves and baking, whilst 11-year-old Polly O’Donnell continued to be an absolute star by retaining the Junior Cup for the sixth successive year.

There were also three classes of wizard hats from pupils of Bovingdon Academy, and prizes for the earlier village Hanging Basket competition were handed out to winners Love to Give for the Hospice of St Francis.
