Report road salt thieves

Herts Highways has received reports of people stealing its limited salt supply 'by the van load'.

With forecasts for ice and snow throughout the week, Highways boss Stuart Pile has appealed for residents to report anyone seen stealing from salt bins.

He said: "We have enough salt to keep treating the reduced network and will keep refilling salt bins.

"I'd like to take this opportunity to remind everyone that salt in salt bins is for use on public roads and pavements.

"We've had reports of salt being stolen for private use - sometimes by the van load.

"If you witness someone removing salt and suspect it might be for private use, please contact the highways department on 0300 123 4047."
