Reaching out for help with summer canal projects

Reach Out Plus Circles of Support
Reach Out Plus Circles of Support

A selection of the opportunities available this week through Volunteer Centre Dacorum.

Are you 16 or over and up for a challenge this summer?

Home grown charity Reach Out Plus urgently needs caring volunteers to help out on their canal-based holidays for disabled and disadvantaged teenagers.

The charity runs a fleet of specially adapted canal boats from their base at Nash Mills. The Enable adventure and development programme provides week long canal boat trips that give young people the chance to experience something new, challenging and rewarding.

You should be a good team player and be able to get along with and communicate with people from all backgrounds and abilities. Volunteers should be 16 or over with an interest in or experience of young people with special needs. Training and support is provided.

Another great opportunity with Reach Out Plus is with the Circles Of Support project. If you are 16 or over, enjoy hanging out with friends, chatting or having someone to come to town with, this could be for you.

Young people with disabilities want to do all these things, too, but without a circle of friends, this is impossible.

Circles links people age 14 to 18 with moderate disabilities with peer volunteers who can spend a few hours of their time each month to make a real difference to someone’s life.

There are currently five circles in Hemel proving vital support to young disabled people and all need new volunteer members. Why not get in touch and see how you can make a difference?

Could you spare a few hours on Sunday, July 21? Rennie Grove Hospice Care needs assistants and marshals to help out at the Herts Cycle Challenge. Money raised will help the charity to offer specialist advice and support to patients and carers 365 days a year.

Helpers are needed along the route which starts in St Albans and passes through Tring Berkhamsted and Hemel Hempstead. It’s a great opportunity to gain experience of events and fundraising! Volunteers should be 18 or over.
