WAR veteran Tom Payne was overwhelmed to tears by a thank you gift he received from children at a primary school after he visited to give them a talk about Remembrance.
The children of Bishop Wood School in Tring sent the former vice-chairman of the local British Legion a hand-made thank you card, inscribed with a poem about peace and a collection of photographs from the time he spent with them on Armistice Day.
He said: “I’ve given talks in school before but this is the best response I have ever had. It made me quite tearful.”
Tom addressed all the pupils of the school on Frogmore Street and spoke for three hours about poppies and the war.
He said: “The children were so well behaved and they asked very intelligent questions. I was impressed by their depth of thought.”
