A MOTHER and her two children have won a competition to design a new war memorial for Hemel Hempstead.
Maura Gillespie, of Potten End, with help from Zak and Zara, produced a bright mosaic of a poppy to clinch the win from hundreds of entries.
In her submission she said: “A ceramic poppy would look bright on a grey November Remembrance Day and it would be a shining reminder all year.”
The plan is to build the memorial near to the similar mosaic sculpture of the rainbow in Marlowes to remember local soldiers who have died since the Second World War.
The competition was set up by MP Mike Penning and the Royal British Legion with support from the Gazette.
Judges commended the ‘striking design’.
