Police back national campaign

Herts Police is backing a national campaign aimed at thieves who trick their way into homes.

Not Sure?..Don't Open The Door is the message at the heart of the crime fighting drive against distraction burglars.

The scheme aims to make people aware of the tactics used by distraction burglars and how they can prevent themselves from becoming potential victims.

Posters featuring four elderly models and depicting commonly used methods of distraction burglary have been sent to police forces across the country. They will be placed in shops, doctor's surgeries, places of worship, community centres, bingo halls and hospitals.

Detective Superintendent Jane Swinburne, who leads Operation Manhunt - the Herts team dedicated to investigating distraction burglaries - said: "The good news is that these types of offences are reducing. In Hertfordshire we have experienced a 54% reduction in offences, which equates to 179 fewer victims.

"We are pleased to support this campaign which, aims to reduce the number of victims still further."
