Police say there is no ‘factual basis’ to a worrying Facebook rumour claiming that a man attempted to abduct a young girl and that there will be Crimewatch appeal on TV about the incident.

The online post says a man grabbed the girl, who was shopping in Hemel Hempstead with her mother, and claimed to be her grandfather. A mystery woman then said she knew the man and it was his grand-daughter.

It’s then claimed that a background check on the man carried out by ‘security’ revealed he had recently been released from prison for sex offences and is on the ‘paedophile register’.

It goes on to say that when the mother getting into her car to go home she was jumped by the mystery woman and beaten up, which was captured on CCTV and will be broadcast on Crimewatch.

Herts Police spokesman Hannah Williams said: “We would like to reassure members of this forum that Herts Police have not received any reports of this nature recently in Hemel Hempstead town centre.

“We would urge people to be responsible when posting comments of this nature which often cause unnecessary alarm in the community. Any reports of this nature would be dealt with very seriously by police.”
