Playground pirates

A super pirate playground has been unveiled after school children helped raise £16,000 to build it.

After months of fundraising children at St Mary's School, Northchurch, can enjoy their pirate-themed playground which they not only raised money for but helped design.

The playground makeover was part of a RBS Supergrounds programme, which awarded 4,000 to transform the school's outdoor environment into a 'superground'.

The school association raised almost 16,000 for the project through events such as selling school cookery books in Berkhamsted, which included recipes from the children, celebrities and Gordon Brown.

Head teacher Elly Haezewindt said, "We are thrilled to have made a start on our school grounds improvements and it has been fantastic for the children to understand and get involved in the planning and design.

It's also great to receive so much support from our parents, the school association and the local community."
