A breast cancer survivor from Hemel Hempstead was chosen to officially open a hospital’s brand new digital mammography service.

Sarah Williams-Gardener, of Water End, was a patient at Spire Thames Valley Hospital in Wexham, Buckinghamshire, after she was diagnosed with breast cancer in December 2012.

The new digital service – available to women over 40 with a referral from their GP – makes it easier to detect changes in the breast tissue that cannot be felt.

The hospital has a ‘one stop breast clinic’, which offers specialist diagnosis and treatment with a team of surgeons, radiologists, oncologists and nurses.

Sarah, who is now in remission, said: “Opening the unit is all about pro-activity. It’s really, really simple to get yourself checked.”
