A PRE-SCHOOL has been saved from closure at the 11th hour after town leaders stepped in to take over its management.

The Lagley Meadow Youth Centre in Douglas Gardens, Berkhamsted, was just a few months away from closure, said Berkhamsted town councillor Ian Reay.

The base provides a morning pre-school for 30 youngsters, and more than 50 teens use it as the Berkhamsted After School Hours (BASH) club.

But the centre’s lease, drawn up about 15 years ago, had specified it be used only as a youth club.

When Dacorum Borough Council found out it was being used as both two years ago, they wanted to close it down.

It has struggled along on a “shoestring” for a long time since then, said Councillor Reay.

Berkhamsted Town Council has now taken over management of the centre.
