An 82-year-old woman is still saving lives after 50 years as a first aid volunteer.

Doreen Hedges, of Northchurch, was recognised for her half-century of service to the Royal Lifesaving Society in an award presentation at Guildhall in London. She received her award from TV presenter and former Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies MBE.

Doreen, who has also has an MBE and has taught lifesaving skills to lifeguards around Dacorum as well as being a volunteer for St John Ambulance and the National Trust at Ashridge, said: “I’m still going on and keep my qualifications in first aid and resuscitation.

“It is very nice to feel that people are grateful for what I have done. I am proud of myself – not many people manage to do 50 years.”
