Two books written by a popular village headteacher have been republished by a heritage society.

Many of Vicars Bell’s former pupils still live in Little Gaddesden where he ran the school from 1929 to 1963.

Lyn Hyde of the Little Gaddesden Rural Heritage Society, a former pupil of the village school, said: “He had a profound influence on the school, the children he taught and the village as a whole, which has lasted even till today.”

Two of his books – Little Gaddesden and The Dodo – were both out of print but the heritage group has republished them in one volume to mark the Queen’s Jubilee Year.

Little Gaddesden is a history of the village and Ashridge, while The Dodo is about the life of a village schoolmaster.

In 1963, the year Mr Bell retired, he was given an MBE for his services to education.

The book, launched on Friday with a party in the village hall, costs £12 and is available from committee members.
