Mystery of the biscuit barrel
A family is appealing for information about a biscuit barrel.
While researching their family history the Joneses, of Chiltern Park Avenue, in Berkhamsted, came across a biscuit barrel inscripted with 'The Clarke Cup runner up 1934' that belonged to their uncle Frederick G Winfield.
Alan Jones said: "The biscuit barrel was handed down to my wife Janice by her mother and father as a keep sake and memento of someone she never knew; and it is our interest now to discover a little bit more about what the inscription means.
"Both Janice's father Ronald James Winfield and grand-father Frederick Henry Winfield were keen sportsmen and it is my thinking that this engraved trophy is also a result of some sporting event."
Frederick G Winfield (b1918) was the second son of Frederick Henry Winfield and Elizabeth Shirley, he died 8th Aug 1943 whilst serving as a Lance Corporal in the Suffolk Regiment in the Far East conflict.
In 1941 Frederick G married a Joyce Canvin and it is thought they had no children.
Ronald played golf in the then artisan section of Berkhamsted Golf Club and also represented his employer John Dickinson in their inter site tournaments.
Frederick H, who was fondly known as Treader, was a very competent bowls player with the then Coopers Sports Club latterly known as Kitcheners Bowls Club.
Mr Jones added: "We have mementos showing in 1946 Treader attended/competed in the National Bowls Championships and in 1953 aged 57 he gained his highest accolade by representing England in the Internationals against Ireland, Scotland and Wales."
