Roman soldiers will be invading the quaint village of Wilstone next Sunday.

The troops from enactment group Vicus will parade through the fiefdom from 12.30pm before doing battle with the Ancient Wilstonians for control of the empire.

But have no fear – it’s just make-believe.

The elaborate procession will begin at the war memorial and end at Wilstone Village Hall, where the village fete will be opened by Queen Jane and the donkeys.

Fancy dress is encouraged and there will be prizes for the best-dressed Roman children.

The Wilstone Showgirls dance troupe will be joining in the Latin fun – pictured above trying out their Roman costumes.

Chairman of the fete organising committee and Wilstone Showgirls member Jill Walker said villagers have been planning the event since October.

She said: “This is your quintessential village fete. You have got all of your traditional fete-y type things and it’s so well done. Everyone does their bit with pride.

“All we are hoping for is some fairly reasonable weather on the day.”

The fete will include a Roman encampment and staged battles, Caesar’s Palace bar, cake stall, bouncy castle, crazy golf, coconut shy, tombola, raffle and more.

There will also be the Fun Dog Show, now in its 11th year – with rosettes for the winning pets. The fete will come to an end at 5pm.
