Customers eager to grab themselves a bargain queued through the car park of Hemel Hempstead’s second Aldi as it opened this morning.

But they needn’t have worried – as another of the European chain’s discount supermarkets has only been open at the town’s Redbourn Road for eight months.

The new store, on London Road, welcomed its first shoppers at 8am after announcing this week that the second low-cost addition to the town would bring with it another 45 jobs.

Balloons were displayed both inside and outside the store to mark the launch.

Manager of the new Aldi Dave Yateman said: “We are delighted to announce the opening of our new store in Hemel Hempstead.

“We hope the local community enjoys the grand opening celebrations and our high quality products at everyday low prices.”

It was revealed this week that discounters like Aldi and Lidl are booming at the expense of middle-range supermarkets Tesco and Morrisons.

The new store alongside the entrance to the A41 will be open from 8am to 10pm Monday to Saturday, and Sundays from 10am to 4pm.
