BBC documentary series Pound Shop Wars will be filming in Hemel Hempstead today as Poundworld becomes latest discount store to open in town.
Poundworld has thrown open its doors to a new 5,000 square foot unit at the Marlowes Shopping Centre – formerly Waterstones – creating 30 retail jobs.
The British bargain retailer, which is family-owned, has been officially opened by the Mayor and Mayoress of the borough of Dacorum Cllr Allan and Mrs Wendy Lawson.
The BBC documentary series’ interest has been spiked by the fact Poundworld’s 248th store will take on American-owned corporate Poundland in a head-to-head battle of the bargain basement shops.
Poundworld promises to offer shoppers a ‘value’ alternative to other high street retailers and ‘massive savings on leading brands such as Cadbury’s, Coca Cola and Johnson’s’.
The store says it will stock 5,000 products for the bargain price of £1 and that ‘savvy shoppers can take advantage of consistently great deals to drive down the cost of their weekly shop’.
Chris Edwards Junior, trading director at Poundworld, said: “We’re excited to be opening our first store in Hemel Hempstead creating 30 new retail jobs for the area.
“Our store has a wonderful range and is in a prime location so we’re confident that we can tempt people away from Poundland with our fantastic bargains.
“We hope shoppers will take advantage of the great deals we have on a vast range that includes branded and value products, from groceries to cleaning products and pet care.”
Mayor Lawson said: “It’s a good thing for the borough that shops are not boarded up – we want to see all units in use, and it is going to increase footfall.
“I don’t think a little competition between pound shops will do any harm at all. Some people have low incomes and need places like this – it is amazing how many brand names are sold here.”
Dacorum Borough Council’s economic development officer Lisa Devayya was also at the launch, and said: “We are working hard to make the town more vibrant and, as the mayor said, it is another shop open in the centre.
“We have just put together a new town centre team who will be working on increasing footfall and with the regeneration team on a £30m programme to improve the area.”
Yorkshire-based Poundworld was founded in 1997 and its arrival in Hemel has sparked fervent debate over the retail offering in the town and a range of opinions in one of our vox pops.
BBC film crews will be at the store from around 11.30am today.
