Chairman of the Berkhamsted & District Chamber of Commerce David Steadman says business in the area is ‘thriving’ – despite two empty units in the town centre.
The other two were filled by a Marks & Spencer Simply Food store and a Costa Coffee four months ago.
But Mr Steadman said the third one is probably only empty at this time because the landlord is being picky about who the new tenant should be.
Mr Steadman said if it is still empty in six months time, or if there is a row of empty shops in the town, then he will start to worry.
Mr Steadman, who is the director of Berkhamsted High Street’s TravelTime World, said: “I think the town is thriving.
“Our business is doing well and all of the reports I hear from the retailers and restaurants – generally speaking, they are doing well.
“All the shops down Lower Kings Road are not on the High Street, so it is a bit more difficult.
“There’s always going to be a turnover of certain shops at times. We have got Vision Express – who opened in our High Street recently – and it is a big brand name.
“We have got all the other big brand names remaining on our High Street.”
Mr Steadman said there would always be businesses moving in and out of Lower Kings Road – which is not as prime a location as Berkhamsted High Street.
He said: “That’s part and parcel of retail.”
