A new Costa Coffee will open its doors in Berkhamsted on Friday, May 9.
It will be moving into the town’s former Royal Mail sorting office, next to the Marks & Spencer Simply Food store – which is also due to open next month.
There is also room for a second shop or restaurant unit to move into the complex – and early rumours suggest that wagamama could be eyeing it up.
The new Costa Coffee outlet will be the 14th to be opened under the Coffee Snobs franchise.
Director Paul Messenger said he has been losing trade since the Costa Coffee in Berkhamsted’s Waterstones was forced to close in September. The in-store outlet was replaced with the book store’s own Cafe W.
There is now only one Costa Coffee outlet in Berkhamsted – between Waterstones and Tesco next to Water Lane.
Mr Messenger said: “The custom that we were getting in Waterstones moved next-door and it has been so busy that it is hard to fit everybody in. Sometimes we run out of seats, because it is so busy.
“This will help spread the load from our current Costa and provide a venue on the other side of town. A lot more people are going to be going there, and they won’t have to walk so far to get their coffee.”
Costa Coffee first opened in Berkhamsted’s Waterstones store nine years ago, and opened an outlet next-door not long after that.
Mr Messenger said: “We have got lots of regulars and have always been popular since we opened there. We have got a good team of people working there and can’t cope with the trade that’s coming in.”
The new store in the M&S complex will be smaller, but is not expected to be as busy. Its opening hours are expected to be from about 10am to about 7pm – but more details will be released after Coffee Snobs has finished securing the unit.
