Has Crimewatch appeal cracked down on carrier bag robber?

Waiting for Video...

Police may be getting closer to ‘bagging’ the man who robbed a Hemel Hempstead convenience store at knifepoint, thanks to a high-profile TV appeal.

A CCTV recording of the incident at the Day One store in Bennetts Gate on the morning of Friday, May 9, was shown on BBC’s Crimewatch last night.

The footage shows the carrier-bagged culprit brandishing a knife and removing cash from the till. He is then shown calmly walking out of the store after threatening the female shopkeeper, passing a couple of schoolgirls on his way.

Presenter Martin Bayfield narrates: “As the female cashier finishes serving one customer, a man in an extremely high-tech disguise walks in. It’s even got eye-holes.

“But despite his comedy appearance, he’s not messing around.

“We need your help to bag this random robber tonight – he may be masked, but someone knows who he is.”

A 10-minute update shown after the original live broadcast revealed the programme had received several calls about the incident, with names of possible suspects now handed to police.

Det Con Paula Mowbray, from the local crime unit at Hemel Hempstead police station, is investigating the robbery and said: “This was a distressing incident for the owner of the store and we continue to make efforts to identify this man.

“It’s an unusual choice of disguise and clearly parts of his face are still on display which is why we’re releasing this footage in the hope that someone will know who he is.

“If you believe you can identify this man please make contact as soon as possible.”

Call the police non-emergency number 101 with crime reference D1/14/2764, or Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111, with any information.
