A young Ferrari fanatic who had his favourite replica toy stolen is now being offered the chance to experience the real thing.

Matthew Shayler, eight, of Beechfield Road, Hemel Hempstead, had his red plastic supercar taken from his drive as he was rushed to hospital to have his appendix removed.

But at the time the theft was reported in June, some Good Samaritans contacted ‘devastated’ Matthew’s mum Elle to offer money towards a new toy, and she now has £100 in savings towards the £300 replacement.

The toy, described by Elle as the little boy’s ‘pride and joy’, had been bought for him as a Christmas present from his grandmother’s bingo winnings.

Since then, real-life Ferrari owners Shirley and Nigel Chiltern-Hunt, of Flaunden, got in touch to give the mini motorhead, who attends Chaulden School, a once in a lifetime opportunity.

Shirley said: “This is a little local boy and it is so rotten that somebody could do that to him – I know how I would have felt if someone had done that to my own children.

“Sometimes when you own cars like we do it is nice to give something back and make people happy.

“Now Matthew will be able to say, ‘Wow, I’ve sat in a Ferrari!’”

Shirley and Nigel will drive their dream machine to the family’s Boxmoor home tomorrow.

It is hoped Matthew will get to sit in and look around the couple’s 360 Spider Ferrari, and even get a spin in it if the weather is nice enough to have the top down.

His mum Elle said: “It’s absolutely amazing that people have wanted to help Matthew, I can’t believe it.

“I haven’t told him about the Ferrari experience yet, because he will keep on and on about it.

“He is really into his Ferraris and knows everything about them.

“I just want to see his face when the car arrives , he will absolutely love it.”
