A nursery cook of more than 19 years says school meals have changed a lot over her time in the business.

Kathie South is stepping down from her role at St Nicholas Nursery in Hemel Hempstead to enjoy herself, after having already worked 10 years past retirement age.

The beloved dinner lady was thrown a retirement tea party at the Bennetts End facility last week.

She said: “I have seen children come and children go, but they have all been like a big family.

“When I started it was meat and two veg, now it’s pasta and all kinds of things we never had when we were children!

“The children keep me young, but it is about time I finished now and enjoyed myself.”
