A monthly nightclub event for people with learning difficulties is celebrating its first anniversary next month.
Ministry of Mencap nights at Hemel Hempstead’s Function Rooms are designed to provide an exciting clubbing experience for people with varying learning disabilities to dance and socialise.
The next event, held from 6pm to 10pm on Wednesday. August 6, will mark the initiative’s first birthday, complete with balloons and birthday cake.
The specially-designed nights at the venue on Waterhouse Street do not feature any strobe lighting, and have been described by the club-goers as ‘the only proper nightclub experience for adults with learning difficulties for miles.’
Regular DJ at the event Birju Thakker said: “It’s a pleasure to play to everyone and to see them laughing and dancing, they have made the event the success it has been.
“This has been a good thing for the community because it’s shown that people with learning disabilities are really just like you and me in that they love to go out and socialise and have a dance.”
Tickets cost £5 on the door and one carer per person goes free.
