Mini-Olympics to be led by mum who did the real thing

A former Olympian will pass on some of her skills to the younger generation by helping to lead a mini-Olympics for schoolchildren.

Mum-of-three Louise Collins, 44, of Upper Hall Park, Berkhamsted, competed in the 200-metre sprint in 23.3 seconds during the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

She trained between working as a stockbroker, but was never able to compete again after falling and breaking her ankle in the snow.

She has helped set up the Berkhamsted Schools’ Mini Olympics, to be held on Thursday, July 5, at the town’s Bridgewater School where she is a governor.

The day before there will be a torch relay between every school in the town and surrounding villages.

On the day itself, each school will represent a different country in their own pretend Olympics.

Louise said: “The Olympic values are massively important – they are really valuable skills the children can take through life with them.”
