A pair of school friends who grew up together in Hemel Hempstead are now celebrating their joint entry into military careers.

Tom Doyle and James Doyle-Tanner, both 22, went to St Rose’s Catholic Infants School and on to John F Kennedy School together.

While James always planned on a career in the armed forces, Tom suffered medical problems as a child and didn’t join his comrade in the air cadets until he was around 14 years old.

The duo went on to study at different universities – where they both completed officer cadet training – before enrolling at Sandhurst miltary training college.

Tom was not due to begin at the Berkshire institution until May this year, but when a place became available he joined the same intake as James.

The firm friends are now embarking on further training – Tom in the Corps of Royal Engineers and James in the Royal Logistics Corps. Tom’s mum Shona said: “What they have achieved is very sought-after and they have done well to get this far. I am proud of both of them.”
