A disabled mum-of-three who mentors others who have recently become paralysed took part in a parachute jump to mark her 40th birthday.

Melanie Burnside, who grew up in Bovingdon, was left paralysed at the age of 24 when the motorbike she was a passenger on crashed.

She raised £1,393 for Backup, the spinal charity she volunteers with, when she tackled the challenge.

“I thought it was the ideal charity to raise the money for,” said Melanie, who now lives in Little Kingshill, Bucks, with husband Darren and their three sons.

“I feel if me now could have talked to me 16 years ago I would have been able to reassure myself that life wasn’t over.”
