Mansion is repossessed

Markyate Cell

Markyate Cell

A historic mansion in Markyate with a colourful history has been repossessed.

The 18-bedroom Grade II listed house in Cell Park, Markyate, is rumoured to have once been considered by the Beckhams when they were searching for a family pad.

But now the future is unclear for the magnificent property set within 79 acres.

It was once home to Lady Katherine Ferrers during the 17th century – also known as the Wicked Lady legend says she got her thrills as a highwaywoman by night, even robbing her own family at the roadside.

It is claimed by some that she still haunts the mansion after dying from a gunshot wound when one of her night-time adventures went wrong.

Tim Pearce from estate agents Strutt and Parker was unable to comment fully on the current financial situation with the property but did confirm: “The property has been repossessed, I can say that.”
