A MAN was cut free from his car and taken to hospital after a crash on the M1 on Friday night.

The man – who had plates in his back from a previous accident - believed he was able to continue driving following the motorway smash, but was forced to pull into the BP service station in Breakspear Way, Hemel Hempstead, and call for help soon afterwards,

Firefighters, who were called at 8.12pm, had to cut the roof off the silver Vauxhall Vectra to free the man.

He was taken to hospital with spinal injuries.

The police and fire service were unable to provide information about the motorway accident.
