Olympic gymnastics star Louis Smith believes that Hemel Hempstead man Max Whitlock has what it takes to lead British gymnastics to the next level.
Smith, 24, helped bring gymnastics back into the limelight with a bronze medal at the Beijing Olympics in 2008 and, alongside Max, was part of the successful Team GB squad at London 2012.
And he is now urging European champion Max to carry on his work in developing the sport in Britain.
“Max Whitlock is a brilliant gymnast and a great ambassador for the sport and that is exactly what we need,” said Smith.
“People like me and Beth Tweddle have taken a step back from gymnastics, and we can still do our part, but it’s up to these guys who are still training to keep going, keep achieving and keep striving to be the best that they can be.
“We are all working in unison for one goal, which is to make Britain proud.”
“The beautiful thing about gymnastics is that it is always evolving, always getting harder and there are always new challenges.
“It is a great time for youngsters who are coming up through the ranks in British gymnastics to step up and really show how excellent we are as a team and the strength that we have got.”
