THE drying up of a river could have been caused by people’s tap usage, environmental chiefs have suggested.

Many Berkhamsted residents have been alarmed by the sight of the dried up river bed, including Ian Johnston, 43, from Park Street, who blamed the construction of new housing in the town.

He said: “During the last few days the River Bulbourne has almost entirely dried up.

“Why has the water table fallen so low that our river no longer flows?

“I suggest it is because the number of new houses built in Berkhamsted is already greater than the environment can support.”
