Former beauty queen turned fashion designer April Banbury created a dress that is sure to turn the heads of sweet-toothed fashionistas.

The Hemel Hempstead designer was commissioned by sweet maker Swizzels Matlow to create an outfit to celebrate the 60th anniversary of Love Hearts.

She’s pictured above, left, when the design was unveiled to the public on Sunday at the famous Clothes Show Live in Birmingham.

April, who competed for the affections of Welsh rugby player Gavin Henson in TV show The Bachelor UK and was crowned Miss Hertfordshire Galaxy in 2011, said: “I’ve always been a huge fan of Love Hearts and the cute funny messages on the sweets, and suddenly thought one day how fabulous they would look on a dress.

“I opted for a 1950s style dress as Love Hearts first appeared in 1954.”

Swizzels Matlow is the maker of many other childhood favourites such as Drumsticks, Refreshers and Rainbow Drops.

Sarah-Louise Heslop of Swizzels said: “We were delighted when April approached us with her idea for a Love Hearts dress and we absolutely love the finished result.

“This marks the start of a very important and exciting year for us as we celebrate such a huge landmark.”

The dress will also be displayed at February’s National Wedding Show.
