A group of hardy fundraisers bedded down outdoors to raise money for eight charities that are dedicated to helping the homeless.

More than 30 people from Hemel Hempstead – including MP Mike Penning and Hemel Initiative for Youth Action group – joined others at St Albans Abbey for the annual Sleepout.

Now in its 20th year, the Sleepout brings together people from all over the Diocese of St Albans to raise awareness of the problem of homelessness in the area.

The DENS shelter in Hemel Hempstead is one of the charities benefiting from the event, and the HIYA group raised more than £1,700 for it on the night.

HIYA youth worker Claire Pritchard said: “It would be wrong of me to say the sleepout was enjoyable, but the experience was worthwhile and shows the realities homeless people face during these cold winter months.”

DENS spokesman Anna Rackett said: “The demand for the services DENS provides is increasing, and the money they have raised will help us to continue to provide much needed support for homeless people.”
