Kidney patient gets transplanted to television
A kidney transplant patient, whose need for a new organ led to the discovery of his ex-partner having kidney cancer, has appeared on television.
Martin Duggan, 30, of St Edmunds, Berkhamsted, received his new kidney in March this year after waiting two years.
A Channel Five news team visited him on August 11 to interview him about his experiences and broadcast a news piece on the same evening.
During Mr Duggan's wait for a donor several loved ones put themselves forward including his ex-partner and friend Denise Whetter, 29.
However, tests carried out on her kidney in preparation for the transplant revealed that Miss Whetter had cancer of the kidney and the organ had to be removed.
This unfortunately meant that Mr Duggan had to wait longer for a donor, but potentially saved Miss Whetter's life.
Speaking of his recovery Mr Duggan said: "It's going great, and it's so good not having to go to dialysis three times a week".
He hopes to hold a disco and raffle event in October in aid of Kidney Research UK.
He added: "You can't take it to heaven with you, so why not donate?"
