A jury was discharged today after they were unable to reach a verdict in the case of a teacher accused of sexually abusing a boy at a boarding school more than 30 years ago.

David Yeld was alleged to have touched the 10-year-old boy in his bunk bed at the privately-run Westbrook Hay Preparatory School in Hemel Hempstead.

The alleged victim, who is now 42, complained to the police in May 2013.

Mr Yeld, 59, now of Church Cottage, Salcombe Regis, Devon, pleaded not guilty to one charge of indecent assault between October 5 1982 and October 7 1983.

He said he had gone into the dormitory as a joke.

After the jury was discharged at St Albans Crown Court, prosecutor Laura Blackband said the victim would be consulted about a retrial.

Recorder Jeremy Benson QC granted Mr Yeld bail.
