WHEN Jill Atkins heard the charity fundraising Ashridge Garden Party had been cancelled due to bad weather, she decided to hold her own instead.

The event at Ashridge Business School, due to be held earlier in July, would have raised £16,000 for The Hospice of St Francis in Northchurch.

Jill said: “I just feel it’s really sad that the charity day was cancelled.”

She invited more than 50 friends to her Little Gaddesden home for a coffee morning yesterday, where donations were collected for the hospice. Her grandson Henry, eight, had grown a sunflower and guests paid £1 each to guess its height.

Hospice fundraiser Sarah Adjer said: “We are really keen to encourage others to have similar events to help fill the loss in funding that the garden party cancellation has meant for the hospice.”
